ROTARY CALLING

Join us in our effort to collect no longer used cell phones.  Between now and mid January, we will gather as many cell phones as possible which will be sent away to benefit our club.  Bring

in all cell phones, even if you feel the

phone is inoperable.   Please put all phones in the box that will be at the front desk in envelopes that will be provided.  Please include

your name, date and number of phones

on the envelope.

Any questions: Call George Trodella.

Helping Haiti

Several members of our Rotary Club have asked, “what we are doing about donations for the Haitian Relief effort”?.  We have been in touch with several of the major relief groups who are already on the ground and making a difference in Haiti. The general response from most all of the organizations which are collecting donations are saying, please send monetary donations now, as it is easier for these groups to buy the necessary items for the particular areas they are serving.  So, anyone who wishes at this time to make a monetary donation to the Haitian Relief effort make their check out to the Rotary 1090 Foundation, which is our  501-c3.

Donations from our 1090 Foundation will be made to these following four organizations.

1. Rotary International Haiti Earthquake Relief Fund #296

2. Salvation Army,

3. Food for the Poor,

4. American Red Cross,

The donations will be made equally between these four groups.

Of course you may make donations to any of the above concerns individually; however, in donating through our 1090 Foundation we are making an impact as a Rotary Club in our community.

HEAD SHOTS

I am still missing a lot of head shots. Please email me a picture as an attachment in jpeg format.  If you are unable to, Charles Felix will be taking pictures at the weekly meeting for the next couple of weeks.  These pictures will appear on our website and will also appear in our upcoming membership directory.

Thank you

Meryl

DISTINGUISHED ROTARY FOUNDATION AMBASSADORIAL SCHOLARSHIP PROGRAM ALUMNI:

Some of the world’s most distinguished leaders are alumni of the Rotary scholarship program, including: Ambassador Otto Borch of Denmark, the late Carlos Alberto da Monta Pinto, Prime Minister of Portugal; Sadako Ogato, the former UN High Commissioner for Refugees; Bill Moyers, prominent television journalist and former deputy director of the U.S. Peace Corps; Paul Volcker, Professor, economist and former chairman of the U.S. Federal Reserve Bank; Sir William Dean, past governor of the Commonwealth of Australia; Philip Lader, former U.S. Ambassador to Great Britain; and renowned pianist Van Cliburn, winner of the first Tchaikovsky International Piano Competition in Moscow. Also included, is our own PDG Owen Freed, who currently serves as Rotary Zone 34 Alumni Chair.  THERE ARE MANY OTHERS AS WELL.

WHO CAN YOU RECOMMEND THAT WOULD BE AN EXCELLENT ROTARY FOUNDATION AMBASSADORIAL SCHOLAR?

PROGRAM:  Gregory Stewart

Lloyd Rhodes introduced Mr. Stewart who stated that transportation is not just being able to get from point A to point B. It involves a comprehensive planning process that considers important components such as current and future land uses, population centers, air quality, alternative modes of transportation, improvements to current roadways, employment and housing accessibility, and bicycle and pedestrian facilities.

The Broward Metropolitan Planning Organization (MPO) serves as the unified voice of Broward County to state and federal legislators about transportation needs and concerns. As the County's voice, the MPO places special emphasis on providing equal access to transportation choices through public outreach initiatives. The Long Range Transportation Plan (LRTP) process is one of many ways that the Broward MPO engages the public. It is also how the Broward MPO evaluates the need for and choices involved in transportation infrastructure planning.

The long range plans include expanding rail service, bicycle and pedestrian lanes, improving roadways throughout the county and restructuring our bus system.  He then had a question and answer period.
