PROGRAM

Susan Gillis spoke about the history and origins of our community.  Fort Lauderdale was unpopulated in the 19th Century.  the Indians and New Settlers primarily lived along and used the New River for transportaion.  Eventually, there was a ferry which crossed at the Stranahan House and was a place for Indians and Stettlers to trade and buy goods.  Then came the Florida East Coast Railway, which opened the area to development.  In the early 20th Century, Fort Lauderdale was strictly a farming town and not a beach community.  In 1906 we had the Everglades drainage project, which brought national attention and created our canals and massive land sales.  Ms. Gillis then had a brief question and answer period.

Thank you Johanna for taking the notes for me.

FOUR WAY TEST

Of the things we think, say or do:

    1.   Is it the TRUTH?

       2.   Is it FAIR to all concerned?

       3.   Will it build GOOD WILL and

              BETTER FRIENDSHIPS?

       4.   Will it be BENEFICIAL to all

              concerned?
