PROGRAM:

Dr. Bob Helmholdt introduced Dr. Bob Barnes who is Director of the Sheridan House.  He is a teacher, a lecturer, an author and hosts a weekly radio show.  Dr. Barnes thanked the club for helping the elderly and the children of our community.  He spoke about the kid that was recently burned by 5 other kids and feels that these type of violent crimes that are done by middle age school children is because these kids are not being told no by their guardians and they are allowed to watch violent programs and play violent video games.  He reported that 1 in every 5 middle schooled age children will cut school this week in Florida alone which equals to 5,200 kids a week.  One kid stayed with him at the Sheridan house for 14 months and ended up graduating high school with a 3.7 GPA and went on to college.  Another child, where his mother couldn't take putting her child through Sheridan House's program, ended up killing a homeless person 3 years.  Our greatest resource is the people that will be taking over our community and country one day.  In America 110,000 guns are brought to school on a daily basis.  The Sheridan House takes in middle aged school children into residency that are constantly cutting school which is a sign that a child will be getting into drugs or is already on drugs.  In addition, Sheridan House offers a program for the single mother to help her get back on her feet.  The average length of stay in the facility is 11 months.  Dr. Barnes stated that to him the most discouraging thing to see is a single mother with a kid that is headed for disaster and who also has other 3 kids behind the oldest and who just cannot get out of the hole and is ready cave in.  Sheridan House has a specific parenting curriculum to boost up the Mom and teach her parenting skills.  Dr. Barnes then had a question and answer period
