THIS WEEK'S PROGRAM

Marcy Ullom, District Governor 2008-2009

The Rotary Clubs of District 6990 have served the diverse regions of Southeast Florida, the Florida Keys, and the Grand Bahama Island community since the chartering of the Rotary Club of Key West in 1916. In 1970, the Grand Bahama Island became part of the district by a RI Presidential Decision. As part of the largest international service organization in the world, Rotarians specialize in providing humanitarian services to our neighborhoods, our youth, our members' vocations and to the world we live in.

District 6990 is a tropical paradise, home to more than 2400 Rotarians belonging to 53 Clubs, and it is one of the most unique Districts in the Rotary world. What makes District 6990 so unique? District 6990 is nestled in the only subtropical climate zone in the US and it is one of the few international districts based in the continental United States that draws its membership from three Florida Counties and Grand Bahama Island in the Commonwealth of the Bahamas.

Monroe County, Florida, is a 120 mile long string of 822 little islands known as The Florida Keys. It boasts of Key West -- the southernmost city in the US -- and Key Largo, made famous by the movie of the same name that starred Humphrey Bogart and Lauren Bacall. Moving north from The Keys brings you into the 926 square miles of Miami-Dade County, known worldwide as a vacation paradise and home of the Everglades National Park with its renowned nature trails. Continuing northward brings you into the 423 square miles of Broward County and its 23 miles of coastal shoreline and white sandy beaches. Moving east, over the water, brings you to Grand Bahama Island, westernmost and one of the largest of the 700 islands that make up the British Commonwealth of the Bahamas.

District 6990 invites you to be a part of its uniqueness. Come share the sun, the sand, the sea and Rotary's warm hospitality.
